Therapy for long term change

On being “stuck”

January 23rd, 2017

For long periods of time in our work as therapists, we find ourselves dealing with being ‘stuck’. We are working with difficult problems which our clients have been experiencing for a long time, problems which are stubbornly resistant to change. So that when change does start to happen for our clients, our own emotions can be quite powerful – like watching an infant taking its first steps, our reactions can be excitement, pride, delight. Such emotions may take us by surprise – we are so used to keeping our own feelings under check and scrutiny – but they are genuine, and an outcome of the real working relationship which has formed between the two people in the therapy room.
