I was typing something the other day, and accidentally typed “threatment” for “treatment”.  I saw rather quickly that there was significance in this Freudian slip, for many clients do see counselling and therapy as a threat, despite the fact that they themselves have chosen to engage with the therapeutic process.  The work does pose threats to our clients (and ourselves): hidden ideas and meanings will emerge which we fear and wish to avoid, and distress will very often result from this.  It’s vital that as therapists we see this, and can help manage and contain this distress – whilst being sure not to collude in avoiding the underlying reasons which fuel and give vitality to it.
